While lack of sufficient light results in poor plant growth, too much light - like that coming into south- and west-facing sunrooms - can also be harmful. Shade plants cannot tolerate excessively high light levels, experts say. When a plant receives too much direct light the leaves bleach or scald, and sometimes die.

Heading into winter, Mary Lou Adams isn’t worried about falling into a low-light funk. Her sunroom will provide all the brightness she needs. “I think the best thing we ever did was put a sunroom on the house,” she says. “People come in and say, ‘Oh, this is such a bright, cheery room.’ It’s a wonderful feeling.”
